Stephen is a Data Scientist and AI Engineer with over 15 years’ experience. During his career he been part of the transition of data analysis to Data Science and watching the distinction form between machine learning and artificial intelligence. The last development comes from the success of models like Chat GPT birthing the role of AI Engineer.
Early Career
Stephen worked at CERN for his PhD and Post-Doc. He was a collaborator on the ATLAS experiment looking into the fundamental forces of the universe. This was an environment with large amounts of data before it was cool. Where analysis problems that are common today first showed themselves. His work was published in two papers.
Measurement of the inclusive and dijet cross-sections of b-jets in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector, Eur. Phys. J. C (2011) 71:1846
Measurement of the bb-dijet cross section in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector, Eur. Phys. J. C (2016) 76:670
Algorithmic Trader
Stephen then applied his Data Science expertise to the challenge of trading the financial markets. He’s been in this sector since 2014 working in a variety of markets. Here he mastered low latency C++ coding for strategy development and python for data analysis. Some of his key achievements are:
- FPGA based market making strategy in Eurex making $10K per day with an annual Sharpe greater than 10.
- Developed a back-testing tool processing the L3 book in less than 1us per tick.
- Developed a software based market micro-structure signal detector using Histogram Boosted Decision Tree for a signal quality model and reinforcement learning for trading decisions.
The requirement to be as efficient as possible started Stephen’s passions for automation. Before AI was the humble cron job, with which most tasks can be achieved.
AI Engineer
The field of AI Engineering has only been around a few years, but it brings all the skills Stephen has developed into one neat package. The new tools available make many complicated task which once needed a domain expert to maintain available to the layman. This democratization means open source alternatives are options instead of expensive software solutions bringing down the cost. His focus is on:
- Business Intelligence and dashboarding.
- Automating reporting and acconting.
- Aiding the transition from a manual excel approach to an AI ready scalable software stack.
However, he’s always open to interesting new challenges. See my projects for more examples.
